ABIDE IN ME, AND I IN YOU… AND WE ARE THE BRANCHES…

In John 15:1-8 Jesus uses a vineyard metaphor to teach about His reciprocal relationship with believers and the fruit this relationship must produce:
“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.  You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.  Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me."
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples."
Jesus is the vine, believers are the vine branches, and Father God is the vinedresser, the one who prunes, trains, and cultivates the branches. Branches (believers) that do not bear fruit are “taken away” (i.e., cut off from the vine) and branches that bear fruit are pruned in order to bear more fruit. Pruning is a soft word for what other scripture calls chastening, rebuke, scourging, the acts of a loving Father in disciplining His children “for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness ... For whom the Lord loves He chastens.” The fruit in this metaphor we understand from Hebrews is holiness – the holy nature of Christ – brought forth from within as our new nature… Christlikeness. Fruit bearing is not just important, fruit bearing is essential, for without holiness – without Christ formed in us – no one will see God! And, fruit bearing is impossible without abiding in the vine: Abiding in the vine produces much fruit. When we are cut off from vital union with Christ it is impossible to bear fruit… and fruitless branches are destroyed!
Abide, meno in the Greek, is both a command in the aorist imperative (vs. 4), and a present participle denoting continuous action (vs. 5). In this passage meno is used in a relational sense rather than of a place or a state or condition. Used relationally of the believer to their Lord meno is a command that means “to remain continually united with Christ, one with Him in heart, mind and will... and to do it with intensity” (the implied sense of the word). And abiding is reciprocal, for Christ abides in those who abide in Him... He remains united with them... with intensity! It is in this understanding the promise of asking and receiving in verse 7 is given: If we are truly abiding in Christ and His words are abiding in us, our heart is one with His... His will is our desire, and we will ask according to His will knowing He hears us… and answers us. Abide is a powerful concept effectively capturing what it means to “believe” -- to cling to, trust in, and rely upon God -- concepts birthed in abiding. And abiders “bring forth much fruit” which glorifies and delights Daddy... putting a twinkle in His eyes...
CHRIST ABIDES IN THOSE WHO ABIDE IN HIM...

SELF IS A HUCKSTER

“Self” is the carnal fleshly nature all human kind are born with, enslaved to sin and lustful of all the glitter the world can offer. Here are a few references from the 129 New Testament scriptures about Self, our fleshly nature:
Scripture states that Self… our flesh, is “weak” and full of “sinful passions”, that “nothing good dwells” in our flesh. Those who “live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh” and “cannot please God”: “For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” We are in a war for control of our heart, “For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another … And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Hear the Apostle Paul speak about his personal regime change: “I (Self) have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I (Self) who live, but Christ lives in me.” We must deliver Self to death “for Christ’s sake … abstaining from fleshly lusts which war against the soul … that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal body.” We are commanded to “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ … cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh … and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts … For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh (Self), the lust of the eyes (Self), and the pride of life (Self) -- is not of the Father but is of the world.” Well… that’s pretty clear. We must put Self to death “by the Spirit” if we want eternal life. It is the job of the Holy Spirit to help us drag Self to the Cross of Christ thereby replacing Self with Christ as the reigning monarch on the throne of our heart, and releasing His nature within.
We cannot change ourSelves... at least not in any significant way. Our Self efforts at transformation are cosmetic at best, sprucing up what we reveal to the world while eliciting love in return. See what is at work here: Concern for what the world esteems is an indictment against our mindset, revealing a wrongly directed heart. The only significant change in life is change that moves us Godward… change that establishes God’s Kingdom within… change that establishes God’s throne in our heart. Our real enemy, Self, will even masquerade as religious to maintain control -- whispering sweet nothings in our ear that God is pleased with us – while steadily moving our heart toward the world. Self is a huckster… a shyster, unscrupulously selling man’s religion as godliness while promoting himSelf as the king of our heart.   Anything short of crucifixion -- Self must die -- and passionate all out submission to the Lordship of Jesus is... well, simply not good enough. No, we cannot change our Selves... we can only surrender to the power that “yearns jealously” to will and work in us of His good pleasure... the only power that can make us Christlike. This is why Jesus sent us “another comforter … the Spirit of Truth”!
WE CANNOT CHANGE OUR SELF

GOD DOES NOT GIVE US OVERCOMING LIFE.... HE GIVES US LIFE AS WE OVERCOME!

“God whispers to us in pleasure, but shouts to us in pain” (C.S. Lewis). Lewis uses “pain” as a figure of speech for anything unpleasant such as affliction, adversity, trouble, disappointments, difficulties, in a word, anything Bad. It is easy to project the life and attributes of our Savior when we are on the mountain top; it is easy to be happy and joyful while basking in His glory... we may even want to put up tents and stay there. But just as Jesus was called to the valley of His cross, so we are called to our cross daily… our life in the valley.  It is there in submission to His will that God will perfect us,  honing away the sharp edges of “Self” as we learn to lean on Him in trusting dependence, live in His presence, release His love, and experience joy in the fellowship of His suffering. God does not give us overcoming life.... He gives us life as we overcome! Father, You promised strength as the byproduct of our joy of You… our joy in You. So release Your strength as we rejoice in You this day: Spiritual strength to willfully submit to Your Lordship and die to Self. Strength of a renewed mind focused on God above all else. Strength of faith to resist the enemy, rejecting the glittery enticements of this world, and rejoicing in all things. And physical strength to overcome the weaknesses of our body. Our reality is the realization that in the act of rejoicing in You we have already overcome, and we are safe within You our stronghold! Amen... So Be It!!!

EndNote: God does not give us overcoming life... He gives us Life as we overcome. The Life He gives is the Christ-Life released within: “My brothers and sisters in Christ, boast and rejoice when you are surrounded by trials, afflictions and hardships, knowing these pressures of life, which test your faith in God, produce God’s patience.  And God’s patience produces Godly character and Godly character produces hope in God.  And God’s hope graces us, because the love of God is lavishly poured to overflowing in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.  So let God’s patience completely finish its objective, that you will be spiritually mature and completely whole in mind, body and spirit, never wanting anything.” (Rom. 5:3-5 and James 1:2-4 combined, John’s translation)
